SJLC KIDS

Knowing God’s love for them, children grow in love for God and others

We want every child to know they are deeply loved by God and to grow in their love for Him and others. Through Holy Baptism, Divine Service, instruction, connection, examples of holy living, and caring relationships, children are rooted in Christ and guided as they mature in faith.

Maybe you’ve got a baby in the womb and you’re wondering about baptism, or you’ve got a high schooler with big questions and you’re wondering what to say. Whatever stage you’re at, Saint James is a place for you. Here, parents are encouraged and equipped, and kids encounter God’s love woven through every part of their life.

“Let everything take second place to our care of our children, our bringing them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. If from the beginning we teach them to love true wisdom, they will have greater wealth and glory than riches can provide.”

- St. Chrysostom, Homily on Ephesians 6:1–3

BAPTISM

Baptism is a miracle. It’s how Jesus brings people—including infants—out of death and into His own eternal life. Alongside Baptism, Jesus also commands us to teach; instructing those in Christ so they can grow and mature. These two together are how disciples are made.

Sunday School helps children grow in their love for Jesus through engaging Bible lessons, hands-on activities, and meaningful friendships.

Our goal is for kids to encounter God’s Word in a way that is memorable and joyful, laying a foundation for a lifelong devotion to Christ. By learning, playing, and worshiping together, children discover what it means to live as part of God’s family.

KIDS IN
WORSHIP

The best place for kids to be during the Divine Service is with the rest of us. The Service is where Jesus comes to bless all His people—including the children—and we don’t want to get in the way of that.

Our parents have found it helpful to sit up front so their little ones can be close to the other children, watch the action, see the fire of the candles, and look at the carvings, windows, and crosses while they eat their snacks.

Parents can also help their little ones by inviting them to sing along or quietly explaining different parts of the Service to them. Don’t worry if they get fussy or squirmy. There’s plenty of room for them to walk around if they need to, and plenty of holy things to look at. We also have a nursery with a changing table if things get “really messy.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is a time for young people to deepen their faith and affirm the promises made in Baptism.

Through regular instruction, Bible study, and participation in the Divine Service, students learn God’s Word, the central teachings of the Church, and what it means to follow Christ faithfully. We walk alongside each confirmand, helping them grow in understanding, devotion, and a lifelong relationship with Jesus and His Church.
